Letting Go of Past Hurts

Are you struggling with letting go of past hurts? Do you find yourself saying, “I don’t know if I can move past this”. We all have experienced some levels of emotional pain and hurt. No one goes through life without experiencing hurt and emotional pain. We all need help letting go of past hurt. Let’s learn how to let go of past hurts and move forward with God’s help.

Here are five steps to help you figure out how to let go of past hurts and find emotional healing through the process.

Become aware that you still need to let go of past hurts – Admit them to yourself

  • Write down all the ways you’ve been hurt in the past

Bring your past hurts and emotional pain to God

  • God cares for you and wants you to live a healthy life

  • Imagine Jesus is in the room with you and read to Him all the ways you’ve experienced hurt in the past

  • Give God time to respond

  • You may need to do this several times before starting to feel better

Find scriptures to help you let go of past hurts

  • Write out on sticky notes some of your favorite scriptures that remind of how much God loves you

  • Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. –Isaiah 41:10

Share your past hurts with a friend, counselor, or pastor/priest

  • When you share honestly with another person, it allows them to carry some of our burden with us, while also weakening the power of the enemy over you

  • We were not meant to walk through this life alone

Remember: Letting Go of Past Hurts Takes Time

  • Don’t give up, God is with you and His wants to see you letting go of past hurts and find ways to move forward with Him

  • Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you. –Deuteronomy 31:8
